Sam’s house was a blue and white, three bedroom at the end of a quiet street. Trees hung overhead and around the property, blocking the view from any neighbors or passing cars. We took a long driveway down to his garage and walked inside.

The space was neat, albeit a bit empty. He had minimal furniture and no decorations, save for a few pictures on the wall. Most were of him and an older man who had the same blue eyes as him. There was a few of young guys in suits standing outside SU campus or at the bar, and one of a woman with dark brown hair. I didn’t need to ask to know it was his mother.

I glided my hand over the granite island in the center of the kitchen. It was a beautiful home, undoubtedly expensive in this area, but it looked like a model. As if no one actually lived here, it was all just for show.

“I've been meaning to decorate,” he said, as if reading my thoughts.

“It’s really nice,” I said. “But could definitely use a splash of color here or there.”

He leaned on his elbows on the counter. “It keeps crossing my mind to move, so I haven’t really bothered. But I just keep putting it off and haven’t gone anywhere. So it may just be time to accept this is where I’m stuck and make the place nice.”

My fingers glided over the glass windows of his kitchen cabinets. Exactly three plates, three bowls, two glasses and one coffee mug lay behind it. “Where do you want to move to?”

“I don’t know,” he stared off. “I’ve been here my whole life. High school, college, law school. I guess I just want to see someplace new.”

“Like Thailand?” I asked, remembering the conversation from our first date.

He laughed. “Yeah something like that.”

I leaned over the island across from him. “If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And you can’t say Thailand.”

“Uzbekistan.”

I laughed. “Where the hell is that?”

“Asia,” he grinned. “Why waste your time going to all the tourist traps? I want to go see some weird places.”

“So Paris wouldn’t cut it then?”

“Too many people,” he said. “And the Eiffel Tower is cool and all but how long can you stare at a building?”

“There’s a lot more than the Eiffel Tower,” I said, laughing. “You sound cranky and old right now.”

“Hey, Paris is expensive. Uzbekistan is not.”

I contemplated. “How about . . . Chile?”

His eyebrows went up. “Chile?”

“It’s not a standard tourist stop, clean, beautiful cities, bright, sandy beaches.”

He nodded. “Okay, Chile.”

I straightened up, peering out the kitchen window. “You have a pool?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah, it came with the place. Hasn't gotten much use though.”

I gave him a mischievous grin before skipping out the back sliding door. When I noticed him still standing at the kitchen island, I sang, “You coming?”

He shook his head, but was grinning. He pushed off the counter and followed me out.
